A visit to San Francisco includes the famous central plaza of Union Square, known as the place for shopping, the most luxurious hotels and the most prestigious theaters. A short distance away is Chinatown, the neighborhood home to the largest Chinese community outside of China. Fisherman's Wharf, the old fishing pier now renovated, is very lively even in the evening with restaurants and shops. The main point of interest is Pier 39, frequented by a colony of sea lions and, of course, tourists. One of the most famous stretches of road in San Francisco is undoubtedly Lombard Street: a charming and characteristic street with eight steep, narrow hairpin bends surrounded by numerous flowerbeds. The most infamous prison in the United States is located right here in San Francisco Bay: the maximum-security Alcatraz Penitentiary housed some of America's most wanted criminals. The best way to visit the city is undoubtedly aboard the famous cable cars that will take you up and down the hills in the heart of the city.
